Planning For Lighting

For our opening titles sequence will plan to use natural lighting. Natural lighting is from the sun during the day, the moon during night and from street lamps. Basically we do not have to create our own lighting for our shots because natural lighting fits with our genre.

Natural lighting creates natural shadows on objects and people which creates mysery and can signify darkness. The darkness can represent crime which links with our crime thriller because it could show that there is a darker side of the character that is being shown in the shot. Also darker lighting links well with the costume because the black outfits will be less visable during darker hours, which could imply that crimes are going to happen.

This is an image of natural lighting from the sun. It will be a good source of light for our filming because it creates shadows like the ones shown above. Also it creates a realistic feel because it is not to bring and shows that not much editing has taken place.

This is an image of natural lighting from street lights and moon light. It shows a street at dusk which is lit up by the surrounds but there are still darker areas. This is a good source of lighting to use for our filming because it creates an intimidating atmosphere for the audince. Moreover it can fit with the narrative of crime because the darker areas can imply that a crime may be committed. It links with the thriller genre because from our research we found that crime thrillers use darker scences when action is about to take place.

This is an example of natural lighting within a street from the film Charlies Angles. It shows that action in crime thrillers takes place mostly at darker times so that the audience will expect action to take place.

Risk Assesment

Risk
Location
How can we prevent this?
There are moving vehicles on the car park
Car park
By staying away from the middle of the road and keeping on paths this will prevent us getting injured by a car. Also during rush hour we should try to not film in this area because it will be busy and there will be a higher risk of injury.
Risk of falling onto the train tracks if too close to the edge
Train station
By staying very clear from the edges of the train tracks this will prevent falling and making sure you are listening for when trains are arriving and leaving the station.
The bridge is a quiet place so real crime could happen there
Bridge cross over
By staying as a group instead of being an individual. Make sure you are comfortable with your surrounding and keep an eye on what is happening round you.
Large groups of people can cause injuries
Bus stop/ train station/ car park
Stay as a group when coming up to large groups of people. Also don’t retaliate if any intimation is made from the group.
Risk of falling if climbing on the walls in the car park
Car park
Do not climb on the walls of the car park. When filming shot 1,4 and 10 make sure you know how far you are from the edge of the wall.
Risk of accident at the bus stop and collision may be caused
Bus stop
Be aware of your surrounds and do not walk into the road unless you have looked at it is clear. Also do not film in the road even if there is nothing there as this can create attention from drivers and collisions may occur if the driver is not concentrating.

Our Pitch and audience analysis

Do you like the name?
1(1)  2(0)  3(3)  4(7)   5(3)
These results shows that there is more people that like our name than there is people who don't because only one person said they didn't like it which is good. This tells us that we have chose a good name for our film and it fits in with the genre and narrative very well.

Would you watch the film?
yes(11)   no(3)

These results show that there is more people that would watch it than people that wouldn't, this also shows that we have chosen a good theme for the thriller and we have looked at what kind of target audience we are aiming our film at and made sure we have researched them well enough to fit the film within the things that they watch.

Why would you watch the film?
there was a variety of different answers but the most common that kept occurring was when someone had said yes they have said it looks interesting and very different to any other thrillers they have seen which means we have caught the eye of the target audience which was one of our aims. The answers that was a no, they said that the only reason they wouldn't watch it was because its not there kind of film with is right because its very unique so not everybody will like it.

What do you like about the story?
There was a variety of different answers but the ones that was most common was, it seems interesting, its very different to other films, gang related, and it seems exciting. They are all very good feedback which tells us that we have done a good job at choosing the type of thriller we are making and the ideas we have come up with. Also this shows that people are interested it things that are different to all the usuall films that are made.

Are the titles clear?
1(1)  2(0)   3(2)  4(8)   5(3)
These results show that there was only 1 person that didn't find our titles clear, this means that we have made good choice in which titles we have chosen and the design on them but next time we should make sure they are clear to everyone.

What would you improve?
All of the results that we got was was the same and they all said they would improve the story line. This shows that we should of put more thought into the idea of our narrative than making sure we have done everything. next time we should find out what kind of story line other people like more so we get it right first time.

Rate the film out of 5? (5 being the best)
1(0)   2(1)  3(3)  4(9)  5(2)
These results show that more than three quarters of the people that filled out the feedback sheets rated the film either 3, 4 or 5 which is a very good result and one we was hoping for. next time we could improve the story and make sure we have looked more at the story for the target audience and made sure we have got everything that we need.

Dexter opening titles analysis

Dexter

I have chosen the film Dexter because I think this opening titles sequence inspires me the most because I think its creative and it gives out a lot of messages but only using certain objects and actions.

This screen shot is one of the first shots of the opening titles and its of a blood sucking mosquitoes which could signify that their will be blood in this movie or there is something that will need sucking up like information for example. This is a close up shot to show the size of the bug compared to the arm this could signify that sometimes when you look at the smaller things you will find the problem. the sound track is quite upbeat and a nice middle pace which goes with the movement of the camera and the pace in which it moves.

This shot is a shot of the man about to clean up the blood on his face from where he has just cut his self and is now bleeding due to his shaving. Yet again there is blood in a shot which is now a large signifier that there is a big possibility that there shall be a lot of blood in the movie. This is also another close up shot which shows the depth that the film might be in and gives you an idea that you will have to look closely when watching. The soundtrack is the same for this shot and the beats move with the camera movement. The fact that this shot contains blood fits in within the genre of thriller and also the mystery of the thriller genre because you don't know what is happening and what will happen.

Again there is blood in the shot, this is becoming very regular and shows a high chance of the film containing blood. The whiteness of the background emphasizes the brightness of the colour of red from the blood and could show that it will have a great significance within the film. The sound throughout all these shots are the same because the effect they want to give with the shots they want to keep it the same all the way through the opening titles. This again is a close up that has been passed through the shots because all of the shots have been close ups so far.

This shot of the man wrapping the floss around his fingers tightly ready to floss his teeth. The change of colour in his fingers shows that he is wrapping the floss around his fingers with great force and could show that he is very violent with everything he does and is very heavy handed which could show the characters aggression and show what he maybe like in the rest of the film.
This is again a close up to show the amount of preasure he is using.

This shot s when he is cutting up the orange but makes it look a lot more dramatic and effective, also it gives out many signifiers and gives off a lot of different images. for example the slow motion from when he is cutting through the orange makes it more effectives and give it more of a dramatic effect. One of the images that it could give off would be that they are cutting through a body because of the splatter of juice as it looks a lot like blood. This shot contains a lot of the colour red which again would give the image of a lot of blood. The soundtrack hasn't changed to fit in with the slow motion of the orange being slices because it would keep up with the Acton. the knife is a signifier that this is a thriller genre because where there is a knife shown normally something bad happens and then needs soling which is usually seen in thrillers.
